This course finally helped me understand music theory, and it took less than a week
One evening, as I was browsing God’s green internet, I came across something that would completely change my relationship to music theory, LightNote.
I’ve always been involved with music in some way. I grew up with musical instruments at home. Over the years, I taught myself to play some piano and read basic sheet music. Since then, I’ve kept a piano or keyboard at home where I keep playing the same handful of songs I managed to learn.
No matter how much I wanted to get better at it, to finally be able to say that I can “play piano”, I never really had high hopes that my piano skills would improve, partly because that would require properly learning music theory.
I’ve always been both intrigued and discouraged by music theory. I love that music is structured, rule-based, mathematical. But then why does the math seem so complicated and inaccessible? Why has it never been explained to me in a way that made sense? And why is it buried under so much notation?
This is where LightNote came in—an interactive guide to music theory which explains the fundamental concepts of harmony, melody, and rhythm. LightNote manages to explain the governing concepts of music theory in such an intuitive and interactive way, without unnecessary notation.
You can get started right away with the free lessons which will explain to you:
What sound waves are
What’s harmony, and why do some notes work well together while others don’t
The pentatonic and chromatic scales, chords, and keys
Once you’ve finished the free lessons and want to continue learning, I really recommend purchasing the essential premium course for $29. If you play guitar, it might be worth opting for the complete course instead.
It took me a few days to read through this course, but I plan on revisiting it properly in the future with more time to dedicate to practicing and creating my own chord progressions.
Happy learning!
